ABOUT

Tish Benson

Leticia R. Benson is a Houston-based artist, writer, and cultural archivist working at the intersection of ancestral memory, ritual practice, cultural survival, and speculative futures. Her practice treats art not as representation, but as a working system in which objects, texts, garments, language, and research function as technologies for remembering, protection, preservation, and continuity.

Rooted in the belief that Black cultural knowledge has always contained its own systems of intelligence, transmission, and survival, Benson approaches what she names Hoodoo Technology as an applied methodology—one that carries history, myth, labor, lineage, and care within usable forms.

This work is not created simply to be observed or separated from its meaning. It is built to remain active through use, stewardship, and intention. Each body of work functions as a record, each object carries lineage, and each gesture contributes to a larger living archive.

A Living Practice of Memory and Ritual

Benson’s work is shaped through long-term study, making, and lived engagement with cultural knowledge systems developed under conditions of survival. Her practice draws from anthropology, performance, ritual traditions, and narrative construction, without separating intellectual research from embodied experience.

Each body of work develops slowly. There is no replication for scale and no rush toward completion. What emerges is part of an ongoing structure rather than a finished series.
